The hand-held spray and suction cleaning device for upholstery and carpets comprises a suction pipe (5) with an angled suction nozzle (6) which is combined with a controllable fluid supply valve (4) which combined unit is mounted in the device so that the control lever (3) for the valve lies centrally beneath the suction pipe (5) in an area which is normally seized by the hand during operation of the device. The lever (3) has the free arm running parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe (5) and can thus be actuated by the fingers of the same hand used for guiding the appts. over the surface to be cleaned. The hand and fingers occupy their normal position so that they are not subjected to premature tiredness.
