The apparatus for acquiring thermal data of an elevational ground scene comprises a wheeled vehicle, and an infrared scanning and detection system of the non-raster scanning type mounted on the vehicle. The scanning and detection system is arranged and disposed to acquire thermal data from the scene along vertically adjacent scan lines transverse to a horizontal path travelled by the vehicle. Thus, when the vehicle moves along the path, continuous panoramic coverage of the scene is obtained. The apparatus further comprises gyrostabilization to correct for distortion caused by roll of the vehicle.
