The automatic package banding machine has a combined feed, tensioning and sealing drive. This is taken via a differential (11), one of whose outputs drives the transport wheel (10) and the other a camshaft (4). The latter has, in addition to the cams for the various operations, a locking cam whose flanks exert, in both directions of rotation, via a linkage, a force in the same direction on the banding strap (1) and transport wheel gripping the strap between pressure mechanism and wheel. The linkage and a pressure member yielding when an adjustable force is overcome, releasing the camshaft so that it can turn, actuating a device locking the wheel. A further cam on the shaft acts on a toggle-lever system, securing the strap against the holder by the clamping and cutting punch when the shaft is not prevented from turning by the locking cam.
