Moist wash material, esp. sedimentation sludges, are incinerated in a fluidised bed of contg. basalt of 0.5-4 mm particle size. The bulk density of the bed is reduced from the 1.9 g/cm3 of the corundum sused in known processes to 1.3-1.5 g/ cm3 allowing lower gas pressures to be used and lower loss of bed material by abrasion. It is also 20 times cheaper than corrundum. The temp. gradient in the bed is lowered and improved incineration observed due to catalytic action. Sludges contg. 3 g NaCl/kg. e.g. 5-50 g/Kg. may be incinerated as well as those emanating from refineries and petrochemical plant.
