Pile of carpets or nap fabrics is cut using two relatively movable cutting tools such that the fibres are subjected to a pulling effect induced by one of the tools. Pref. the pile fabric is pulled across a wedge shaped support and the pile is subjected to a pulling action by a helical cutting drum to bring the pile fibres into contact with an endless cutting band movably axially along the drum along a tangential plane of the drum. Used for finishing pile by cutting or trimming projecting fibres above pile.
