The dual-purpose ladder, is in two halves, one being fitted with top guideway for the stringers of the other, so that it can be used both as an extensible upright ladder and as a stepladder. The halves are connected by a flexible draw medium, limiting spread when they form a step-ladder and limiting extension when upright. One end of the draw medium (19) is held on a sliding carriage (20) mounted on one stringer (14) of the first ladder half (11), and movable lengthways as far as an upper stop (22) on this stringer. The other end may be retained at a set height on the other ladder half (12), pref. at such a height that the sliding carriage holds the draw medium taut by its own weight, when the ladder (10) is upright and folded.
