Appts. for attaching hairs to a backing has a bearded needle which during its vertical upward-and-downward stroke is reciprocated transversely to interlock the hair with the backing by means of =1 knot, the reciprocation and vertical needle displacement being repeated several times for each hair. Positive attachment of each hair is effected irrespective of mesh size of the backing.
