Sugar cane bagasse stockpiling - in open air heaps after removing heavy impurities and adjusting moisture content

Sugar cane bagasse used for the prodn. of furfural is stored and processed by removing heavy impurities (sand, metal particles) in a water flushing tank. The moisture is removed by a press operation, leaving the bagasse slightly absorbent. Spraying with waste water from the furfural process raises the moisture to that required before the bagasse is stockpiled in large open air heaps. The danger is spontaneous combustion is eliminated and the labour of drying and storing in bails which have to be unpacked is saved.
