A subterranean watercourse (1) employs rotary flow to avoid the accumulation of sediment etc. This is achieved by using a mechanical agitator or rotor (4) which is driven manually or by a suitable power source. The rotational flow so generated combines with the existing flow velocity of the water to generate in the water course the necessary spiral flow (5) which stirs up and conveys along with it any sediment which may be present. The system represents an alternative to the air cushion principle which may not be applicable in every case.
