The process is for making outdoor squares, paths, playing areas or similar, with red gravel surfaces, and ensuring that these are elastic and retain their elasticity. A layer (3) of elastic material is first applied to the vegetation-covered base or substructure (1), and a covering mat (4) is laid on this. The red gravel coating (5) is finally applied to the mat, and worked into the playing area or path surface. The layer of elastic material may be preceded by another covering mat (2). The elastic material may be rubber and re-used wool, while the mats can be of fibre weave with non-rotting fibres.
