The control system for a crankshaft grinding machine adjusts the speed of the drive to suit the shape of the cam portion (B) as it is held against the face of the grinding wheel (7). The machine has a swinging table (3) carrying the headstock (4, 5) and the tailstock (6) between which the crankshaft is mounted. At the bearings (2) the end is included an angular speed measuring device (13) and on the drive motor (9) is mounted a rotary angle detector (14). These are connected to a rotation control unit and a servo amplifier controlling the motor. The whole system ensures that the linear speed of the surface being ground remains constant.
