Dry cellulose prodn. from wood chips - by thermal grinding at moisture to chip ratio of less than five to one and drying with high temp. gas (SW 11.7.77)
Cellulose is produced from wood chips derived from wood processing by passing the chips through thermo-mechanical mill and the cellulose obtd. is dried in contact with gases heated to 300-600 degrees C in a turbulence drier. The gas produces a shearing effect on the cellulose to separate fibre bundles in the cellulose. Process is carried in a condition in which the wt. ratio of moisture to chips is less than 5:1. Pref. the process is carried out with a wt. ratio of 3:1. Also the temp. od drying is reduced to 100 degrees C during the period of one second. Prod. is used in disposable diapers, catamenial appliances. Dry mfr. of paper or cardboard is also provided. The redn. of wt. ratio from 30 to 5 effects substantial savings in cooling water used.
