The punch (18) is pushed by a press through sheet metal (12). The metal is held down by a stripper plate (13). The part is punched into a die (11) by the punch. A probe (14) is provided which touches the top surface of the stripper plate. If the punched out part is pulled back with the punch and settles under the material to be punched, the probe (14) is lifted. This then switches the press off via a relay (16) and prevents the punch being damaged.
