Acrylic! bone cements for surgical applications prepn. - by mixing powdered PMMA with emulsion contg. methyl methacrylate, accelerator and hexa:fatty acid ester of polyoxyethylene sorbitol
The parent specification describes cement for surgical applications consisting of finely dispersed PMMA in powder or pearl form, contg. a polymerisation initiator and opt. an X-ray contrast material, mixed with a homogeneous aq. emulsion contg. (a) 45-80 wt. % methylmethacrylate monomer, (b) 15-50 wt. % water, (c) 0.5-5 wt. % of an emulsifier, (d) 0.2-5 wt. % of an accelerator and (e) opt. up to 3. wt. % synthetic fibres 3-5 mm long and other additives. In this patent of addn., the emulsifier is a hexafatty acid ester of polyoxyethylene sorbitol. The cements cure rapidly (10 minutes) and are esp. useful as bone cements e.g. for bonding artificial hip- and knee joints to the bone. The named emulsifiers give emulsions with excellent stability. The cements have excellent compatibility with tissue and do not evolve methyl methacrylate monomer after setting, which could cause fat embolism in the cardiocirculatory system.
