Appts. for making a floor covering, uses a stainless steel band (10) onto which is deposited a foil base layer in flowing form. A layer of foam material is then applied, followed by a reinforcing textile web. A heating stage is followed by application of a covering layer. This is followed by a station in which the foam layer is expanded. The textile layer is coated and then embossed by embossing rollers (21). These are followed by three colour or lacquer applicator rollers (24, 25, 26) around the periphery of the return roller (12) for the steel band and the composite floor covering layer. A transparent outer layer can be included in this final stage. The floor covering layer is then removed from the steel band and wound onto a roll at the end where the band passes around the other return roller.
