Lead acid battery electrode not contg. Sb, or low in Sb, is impregnated with an active mass contg. Sb in a form enabling the Sb to be released steadily and continuously through the life of the battery. Pref. the Sb is in the form of metallic granules 100 (400-800) mu dia., distributed throughout the active mass and consisting of Pb-Sb alloy contg. 10-80 (40-60) wt.% Sb, or Sb (alloy) particles 50-150 (80-120) mu coated with a plastic matrix to form granules 0.8-3 (1-2) mm dia. The corrosion of the positive electrode is reduced due to the reduced H2 overvoltage, without the accompanying thickening due to the presence of oxides as in prior art, and without formation of dendrites to cause short circuiting. The antimony does not dissolve in the electrolyte as fast as the Sb oxide or fine grain Sb used in prior art.
