Prodn. of pregnadiene derivs. of formula (I) comprising incubating the 5-pregnenes of formula (II) with a live culture of Aspergillus occhraceus and Bacillus lentus. In the formula, R1 is H, F or CH3; R2 is H, beta-OH or alpha-or beta-methylene; R3 is H or OH, or R2 + R3 are together a C-C bond; R4 and R5 are H or 1-6C alkanoyl. Specific (I) are 3 beta, 11 alpha, 21-trihydroxy-5-pregnene-20-one, its 16 alpha-methyl deriv.; 3 beta, 11 alpha, 17,1 tetrahydroxy-5-pregnen-20-one, and 3 beta, 11a, 21-trihydroxy-5,16-pregnadien-20-one. (I) can now be made in a single stage, c.f. the method of DT 1909152 which requires preliminary treatment of the 3 beta-hydroxy steroids by Oppenauer oxidn. or fermentation with Flavobacterium dehydrogenans.
