Xylitol is prepd. by treating xylose-contg. material, esp. waste, with CF3COOH, and is then recovered from the mixt. obtd. Xylitol is used as a sweetener for diabetics, pharmaceutical and as a moisture-retainer, e.g. for tobacco, foods, and skin-care. Xylitol can be recovered directly, e.g. by distilling off CF3COOH in vacuo, without neutralising or hydrogenating the mixt. obtd. The CF3COOH can be recovered and recycled. CF3COOH is incombustible. Process is quick, e.g. takes 3 hrs. including purification.
