In line with the bearings (11) of a crankshaft (10) of a diesel engine of a ship, are placed sensors (C) for continuously detecting the radial positions of the surfaces of the bearings of the shaft (10) and for producing signals representing these positions. The signals are supplied to an analog or digital processing circuit (16). The signals received are compared to each other and to reference values by the circuit (16). An alarm or signalling circuit (18) is triggered by the processing circuit (16) when at least one of the signals becomes greater than or equal to the corresponding reference value. Thus the requirement for periodic inspection in order to prevent damage to the shaft is avoided. IMAGE
