The system produces a travelling gantry for a crane etc, having two base sections each travelling on a rail and joined together by the gantry beam. Eadh base section has two wheels in the same plane and spaced apart. Each base section comprises a bridge piece (4) for fixing to the gantry beam (3), and two wheel boxes (5, 6) fixed to the bridge piece at opposite ends, these having drillings (10) for the wheel axles. The components are assembled together on a jig with parallel pins, whose dia. is the same as the wheel axle drillings. A flange can be first welded onto each wheel box, the wheel axle drilling being then made at a set distance from the flange.
