A character indicator is for rows of figures or letters. It has a number of stacked character carriers with rows comprising one or mor characters. Each character carrier of a row supports a section of the character picture which consists of parallel strips arranged at a distance from one another. The distance corresponds to the width of a strip times the number of character carriers of a row. The character indicator is accommodated in a housing (40). A mask (11) is fixed to the housing (40) and consists of a window. The character carriers (13) are arranged in a package in succession behind the mask (11).
