Phosphor stimulated by a low energy beam is of formula M1+x01-(y/2)Xy (in whih M is Zn or ZnMg. X is halogen, pref. Cl or Br. x =0.005, pref. 0.0002-0.002. y =0.005, pref. 0.0002-0.002). The phosphor can be used in display tubes or low voltage display system. Stimulation is effected by a beam of ca. 20 eV and emission can occur in many colours from blue-green to orange, depending on the amt. of halogen. In an example, a mixt. of 1 g LiCl and 100g ZnO was fired for 30 min in H2 at 980degrees C in a crucible. Part of the prod. emitted orange fluorescence. In UV light, the upper layer did not fluoresce, whilst the intermediate layer was green-emitting and the lowest layer yellow-emitting. An orange -fluorescent phosphor, Zn1.002O 0.999Cl 0.002, was obtd. from the lowest layer.
