Optical fibre bundle consolidation connector - includes hollow ferrule with inner flat surfaces to miminise compression hoop effects on outer fibres

The fibre optic cable for use in a fibre optic connector has a ferrule compressed around the end of the fibre bundle. The bore in the ferrule has a cylindrical wall with circumferentially spaced flat surfaces which minimise the compression hoop effects on the peripheral fibres of the bundle, thereby maximising fibre bundle consolidation. The ferrule pref. has a cylindrical outer surface so that no keying of abutting fibre optic cables is required. This minimises optical losses due to concentricity deviations in the ferrules and rotational misalignments between them.
