Prodn. of a polymer by allowing an aralkyl ether or formula : R1 -((CH2OH a (where R1 is an aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon ether radical; R is 6C alkyl and a is between 2 and 3) to react with phenol cpd. in amt. 1.3-25 mols./mol. aralkyl ether, by conducting reaction in presence of CuCl2, CuSO4, HgCl2 HgSO4, Hg2Cl2, Hg2SO4, AgCl, Ag2SO4 or NaHSO4, as catalyst. The polymers obtd. have higher softening pts. than those obtd. from phenol cpds. and conventional catalyst and have little cold flow tendencies.
