1460318 Dewatering sludge READING & BATES PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CO EL PASO SOUTHERN CO and BOEING ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS Inc [trading as RESOURCES CONSERVATION CO] 24 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 32720/74 Heading C1C In a process for dewatering a material containing solid matter and bound and unbound water the material is mixed with an amine of formula (where R 1 is H or alkyl; R 2 and R 3 are C 1-6 alkyl or C 2-6 alkenyl and the total number of carbon atoms in the molecule being from 3 to 7), the amine having an inverse critical solution temperature in a two phase system with water. The temperature of the mixture is prevented from rising above the inverse critical solution temperature to form a single phase liquid containing the solid, which is then separated from the liquid, for example by filtration or centrifugation. The temperature of the mixture is preferably maintained at 3-8‹ F. below the inverse critical solution temperature and further reduced to 23-28‹ F. below this temperature prior to separation. The process is preferably used for dewatering an aerobic or activated sewage sludge.
