The cable is moved by being gripped alternatively by clamps (7), (8) and moved in short steps. Each clamp is formed from cooperating internal (12) and U-shaped external (13) jaws which are controlled by cams (14), (15). A lever is moved to rotate an arm (9) which is connected at either end to one of two links (10), (11). The upper link (10) has a central slot to receive the cam pins of the clamp (7) nearer the arm (9) and is bent downwardly (23) to connect to the link system for moving the second clamp (8). The lower link (11) connects directly to the clamp (7) nearer the arm (9). Rotation of the arm causes the links (10), (11) to move in opposite directions to cause corresponding opposite cam movement and clamp actuation.
