Reactor core configuration in which vertically orientated flat plate fuel elements and a square modular construction are utilised incorporates dovetailed module containment walls with integral control absorbing panels together with safety cooling and instrument channels. The configuration is partic. applicable for heterogeneous light water reactors. Modular construction facilitates assembly and dismantling and accommodated thermal expansion. Parallel mounted flat plate elements are total surface cooled and are inserted or removed without disturbance to the containment.
