Magnesia-alumina co-gel antacids - with low content of alkali metals, low magnesium content but stable and active when dried

Antacid compsns. almost free of alkali metal are prepd. by reacting MgCO3 and/or Mg(HCO3)2 with AlCl3 and/or magnesium aluminium hydroxychloride in an aq. medium to ppte. a gel depending on the reactants used, sepg. the gel from the mixt. to give an antacid practically free of alkali metal, the proprotion of the reactants being such that the Mg contained in the gel is only a fraction of that found in such co-gels which may have a MgO/Al2O3 ratio of 2:1, pref. 1:2. Suitable for treating peptic ulcer, dyspepsia etc. in patients with hepatic or cardiac disorders in whomalkali metal excess is undesirable.
