The pad is placed behind a metal binding strip round otherwide unwrapped objects. The device has a basically circular shape (1) with chamfered edges (2) and two grooves (5) in which the metal strip is to lie. A rectangular central hole (3) has dimensions large enough to accommodate the clip used to join the ends of the metal strip. The edges of the hole perpendicular to the axis of the grooves serve to retain the clip in position. the corners of the hole are rounded to reduce stress concentrations. The thickness of the ring is about five times that of the binding strip, this to correspond with the thickness of the joining clip.
