A heat exchanger with a shell, having fluid entry and outlet, and a tube bundle, has a deformable plate through which the tubes pass, giving a flexible connection between the tube bundle and the shel, to take up differential expansion between the shell and the tube bundles and between the tubes themselves. The arrangement avoids the need for robust construction to withstand strain or the provision of a bellows joint, and permits sections other than circular. In addition it allows for differential expansion between adjacent tubes. Used in all cases where there is a small pressure difference between the two faces of the end plates of the exchanger, e.g. isotopic sepn. by gaseous diffusion.
