A vessel (1) has inside it a smaller diameter open ended sleeve (4) having a flanged rim (9). A lid (12, 14) with louvres (13) fits on the rim. The sleeve (4) has a partition (5) across the lower part, forming upper (6) and lower (7) chambers. The upper walls are perforated (8) and the lower chamber has gaps along the edge. Food in the upper chamber is covered with water, filling the gap between sleeve and outer vessel, but not the lower chamber (7). When heated, air in this chamber expands, some escaping to atmosphere and leaving a steam filled space. On cooling, this receives the water from the upper chamber.
