One pipe (1) carries the device (2) which connects to another pipe (3). Each of the pipes has a flange (4), (5) receiving sealing rings (6). The two pipes are forced together by power from a thrust device consisting of two piston and cylinder assemblies. At the end of the assemblies are three radial arms (19) hinged to arms (20) which act on right angled members (8) which have clamping claws (40) at their free ends. Movement of the pistons first closes the claws on to the flange of one pipe (3) and then draws it towards the second pipe to make a secure joint.
