Aq suspensions of hard asphalt - for precoating aggregates, stabilised with anionic emulsifier

Stabilised aq. suspensions of hard asphalt comprise (a) 30-60 (pref. 40-55) wt. % of finely divided hard aspha (b) 70-40 (pref. 60-45) wt. % H2O; and (c) 0.05-0.3 wt. % of an anionic emulsifier, (pref. a soap obtd. by treating tall oil with NaOH). The suspensions are esp. useful for precoating aggregates, e.g. for the prodn. of road surfaces. The suspensions can be stored at ambient temp. for long periods (e.g. 1 week) without phase sepn., and the precoated aggregates have adhesive properties at least as good as those caoted with hot bitumen.
