Retractable space-saving furniture, e.g. beds for apartments, involves the use of split floor levels with false floors at the higher levels bearing alternative furnishings on the horizontally opposed surfaces. The article not in use folds down and is concealed in the limited storage space provided beneath the floor. Typically a floor section would bear a bed (16, 17) on one face with a plain floor surface (24) on the opposed face, and rotate by means of leverage system about a longitudinal floor level axis to bring the alternate faces into use. The axis of rotation is on the building substructure.
