A washing machine with a drum with peripheral side access has a micro-switch which brings the drum to rest opposite the loading door. The switch is normally open and cooperates, at the end of the washing cycle, with a cam on the drum, which causes the switch to short circuit the windings of the driving motor. The switch is connected in series with a current-limiting resistor. The switch cooperates with the cam via a thermal switch so that the halting mechanism operates after a predetermined time period. The drum is very rapidly brought to standstill.
