Device for detecting oil spillage on water surface - has floating buoy with rotating transparent disc, light source, photocells and annunciator circuit

The device is used for detecting oil split on the surface of the water. It consists of a buoy (1) with a slot (2), floating on the water. The buoy contains a transparent disc (3) which is driven by an electromotor (4). A light source (5) transmits through the disc, to be picked up by a photoelectric cell (6). The light from the source which does not travel through the disc is monitored by another photoelectric cell (7). A warning lamp (9) is fitted on the top of the buoy. The power is supplied by a battery (8) which also acts as a ballast. Part of the disc will be below the surface and part of ti will be above. When the transparency of the disc is reduced, the change in signal is picked up by the first photoelectric cell to produce a signal which actuates the light circuit.
