Fungicidal and antitumour agent - extracted from cultures of Peniophora affinis

A cpd. (I) having the empirical formula C13H8O3, forms crystals having a m.pt. of 165 degrees C (Maquenne block), and a mol. wt. of 212 (by mass spectra), is new. The cpd. is thought to have formula (I): and is prepd. from cultures of the fungus Peniophora affinis. In an example this fungus was cultured aerobically in a medium contg. sources of carbon and nitrogen, the prod. extracted into ether, evapd., taken up in methanolbenzene and chromatographed on silica.
