The gas is placed in a first vessel of a volume (VI), and its pressure P1 measured. Gas is then decompressed by connection of this vessel to a second vessel of volume (V2) in which initial pressure is P2. A time is allowed for temperature stabilisation, and then pressure P3 in this vessel combination (2) measured. Values of P1, P2 and P3 are used for the imperfection coefficient Z computation. Pressure P2 is given the value of atmospheric pressure, or a value near it. The ratio of volumes V2/V1 is given a value between P1/P2 and 2P1/P2. Coefficient Z is computed by the method of consecutive approximations requiring the knowledge of only the values of P1, P2, P3 and V2/V1.
