The tyre has snow chains (1) spaced at even radial intervals around the circumference. Each chain spans the width of the tyre tread and is joined to a strap at each end. One strap (4) passes from the back of the wheel through gaps in the rim to the front of the wheel where it terminates in a loop (5). The second strap (3) passes through the loop and connects through a tensioning buckle (7) to a central star plate (8) with radially spaced hooks for each of the buckle loops. A separate cable with connection joint passes through the outermost link of each chain and, when tensioned, prevents slippage of the chains. The chains can be fitted without raising the wheel.
