Butt joint for cable - uses hollow conical inserts to expand cable ends in mild steel sleeve to strengthen joint

The cables consisting of a central core and covering layers are butt joined inside a mild steel sleeve. Within the sleeve are two hollow, conical fittings, each formed with a flange of the same outside diameter of the sleeve. The bore of the fittings is the same as the core diameter of the cables and the conical taper is small, ending in a sharp edge. Each fitting is initially inserted in the end of a cable, the sharp end of the taper passing between the cable core and first cover. The flange ends are then inserted in the sleeve, one from each end and the cables pushed in firmly. As the flanges butt against each other, the tapers are forced into the cables, expanding the covering and finally also expanding the sleeve in the central region.
