The individual fire escape comprises a steel wire cable (3) which is attached to a point on the high building. A tube (2) fits over this cable and carries a fold-up seat (12). At the top is a metal box (1) containing a spring loaded pivoted lever (5, 6, 7, 8), its end pressing against the cable through a hole (4) in the side of the tube. The weight of the user, when seated, locks the lever against the cable and prevents descent. An exterior handle (9) is fixed to the lever and, when this is pushed down, the chair is released and descends under the control of the user.
