The coffee making machine has a water container heated by electrical elements. The steam pressure forces the water through a filter and the ground coffee. If the filter becomes blocked, steam pressure and water temperature rise, operating a thermal cutout. If this is defective, a spring loaded safety valve releases the pressure under a cover. If this is also defective, the sealing washer (14) between water container and filter deforms and leaks the pressure. The washer is cruciform shaped (12) and made from a material having a permanent set when deformed and must be replaced (15) before the machine can again be operated.
