o-Xylene or naphthalene is catalytically oxidised in a gaseous phase using a catalyst comprising 1-20 pts. wt. V2O5 and 99-80 pts. anatase type TiO2 and at least one of 0.01-1 wt. % Nb2O5 and 0.05-0.75 wt. % K2O and Cs2O(K2O 0.25 wt. % Cs2O, 0.5 wt. %), 0.05-0.3 wt. % Na2O, 0.5-1.1 wt. % P2O5 and 0-0.5 wt. % of Rb2O based on the total amt. of V2O5 and the anatase type TiO2 carried on a porous carrier mainly composed of silicon carbide on the inlet side for gas matls., and a catalyst comprising 1-20 pts. V2O5 and 99-80 pts. anatase type TiO2 and at least one of 0.01-1 wt. % Nb2O5 and 0.05-0.75 wt. % K2O and Cs2O (K2O 0.25 wt. %, Cs2O, 0.5 wt. %), 0.05-0.3 wt. % Na2O, 1.2-2.5 wt. % P2O5 and 0-0.5 wt. % Rb2O based on the total amt. of V2O5 and TiO2 carried on a porous carrier mainly composed of silicon carbide on the outlet side, each of the catalysts being layered.
