An elastomer based bonding material, for use with composite propellant blocks contg. a polybutadiene binder, also contains phenolic antioxidant(s) as polubutadiene polymerisation catalyst. The bonding material is partially coated on the propellant block to act as inhibitor or as primary layer between the propellant and inhibitor. It contains an elastomer and opt. a refractory filler and/or endothermic decompsn. filler. The elastomer is esp. polybutadiene, EPDM, or a trisequenced copolymer of styrene with butadiene or isoprene Pref. phenolic antioxidants are tri(nonyl phenyl)phosphite (I), di(t.butyl)p-cresol (II) and pentaerythritol tetra 3-(3,5-di-t.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate (III). Improved mechanical properties are obtd., e.g. shear, traction and peel resistance since the propellant surface is more highly crosslinked than the interior and is chemically bonded to the elastomer of the bonding material.
