Safety device for washing machine, with motor with main and auxiliary windings for starting each for one of two speeds, comprises an electric switch with rapid-action working contacts, connected in series with at least one of the windings. Pref. the device comprises a switch with rapid-action working contacts connected in series with the auxiliary winding, a switch for supplying the auxiliary winding via the first switch and for supplying the main winding, and a thermal interrupter or circuit breaker disposed in the supply circuit common to both windings. Thus the auxiliary phase high-speed winding is supplied for the time required for increasing speed, and restarting of the motor is avoided unless preceded by low-speed starting.
