An evaporator, having a hot source and a cold source incorporates a heat-exchanger between those sources. The soln. to be evaporated is conveyed, together with a gas, through the exchanger towards the hot source, and the gas, satd. and reheated in the hot source, is recirculated countercurrent to the mixt. of soln. and gas. The mixt. remains under constant press. and its temp. and compsn. vary continuously along the exchanger, maintaining the necessary temp. gradient for heat transfer. The cold source separates humidity from the recycled gas and a blower re-injects it into the soln. to be evaporated, at the entry to the heat exchanger. The evaporator operates in a continuous manner, and the efficiency is greater than that of existing multiple effect evaporators in which the operation is in a number of stages.
