An appts. charges a thick material into a vessel, e.g. a combustion chamber, an incineration chamber, or one for drying or calcination. Such materials may be in the form of a pasty suspension. The viscosity may vary over a wide range and there may be foreign objects present which can cause blockages. The material is charged under press. by using a tube and a jet of gas directed against the jet of material leaving the tube. The appts. consists of a feed tube under press. the discharge end of which projects into the chamber and is surrounded coaxially by an annular convergent nozzle. The gas is fed to and expands through the nozzle so that it meets immediately the stream of material. The invention allows materials to be charged into a reactor over a wide range of viscosities, imparting great flexibility of use, reducing the consumption of dispersing gas to a mix.
