Aldehydes are prepd. by liq. phase hydroformylation of aliphatic olefines with CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst consists of an aq. soln. contg. RH as metal or cpd. and =1 sulphonated phosphine having formula (I) Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3 are aryl. Y1, Y2, Y3 are 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, halogen -OH, -CN, -NO2 or -NR1R2, in which R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl. M is a solubilising cation consisting of alkali(ne) earth metals, Pb, Zn, Cu NH4 or N(R3R4R5R6)+, in which R3, R4, R5, R6 are 1-4C alkyl. m1, m2, m3 are integers 0 to 5, n1, n2, n3 are integers 0 to 3, provided =1 of n1, n2, n3 is =1. Aldehydes are obtd. in high yields. Reaction selectivity is =90%. Hydroformylation prods. are easily sepd. from reaction medium. Catalyst system can be recovered without loss in activity.
