The hoist, which can travel along a beam (37) on rollers (38, 40) mounted on top, has a frame (3) with a drum (9, 10) extending from each side, each with a helical frame for the cable (2). They are rotated by a motor (1) through a reduction gear inside the frame. The ends of the cable are connected to a braking device (12). When the cable is fully unwound, the braking device is held against a swinging bar (34) which operates a switch to stop the motor (1). A rod (20) each side of the frame carries a block (22) to which is attached a ring shaped cable guide (23) which ensures that the cables (2a, 2b) are wound evenly on the drums. The block has a slot through it, through which the cable passes. The cable is held against its drum by a roller on an arm held in position by a spring.
