The heat exchanger system is used in gas cooled high temperature reactors. Heat is transmitted from high temperature primary gas arriving from the reactor to a working gas. The heat transfer system is able to accommodate very high working gas temperature and its metal structure does not deform plastically nor fracture to an inadmissible extent. The heat transfer system is able to meet the boundary conditions of a reactor plant. The hot primary gas flows at first into a cluster of bayonet sheath type tubes (31). Subsequently it flows through parallel connected counterflow heat exchanger (47). After that the gas flows in parallel streams through annular gaps between the bayonet sheat tubes (31) and into coaxial pocket tube (33). The bayonet sheath tubes (31) are held within a cylindrical shell n21) and primary gas flows through it in longitudinal direction. The counterflow heat exchangers (47) are arranged coaxially to the cluster of bayonet sheath tubes (31) and into an annulus (48) enclosing the shell (21).
